It takes time!

Last night was another 500m in the pool. I set out to do 1000m again, but wouldn't you know it, I met someone who is a triathlete and we got to chatting, and next thing I knew it was time to leave. Sometimes I amaze myself in how I will talk to anyone sometimes. LOL This did get me to thinking though....I wasn't the only one who was striking up conversations with complete strangers as we leaned against the pool walls. Everyone seemed to be chatting as they stopped for a 2 minute breather. Why is it that physical activity does that to us? How many times have you been at the start line, waiting for the 'GO' signal, and started chatting to the person next to you? I do it...you all have the nervous energy...so you start talking about goal times...what races you have done...etc.

Once again, I thought of the time it took me to do 500m and how my body felt as I was doing it.  Sore, tired, and SLOW!!!  There were a couple of times that I stopped about 5 feet from the edge and walked...it was 5 feet...but I felt I just couldn't do one more arm stroke. Sounds dramatic doesn't it? I thought, how am I ever going to feel comfortable doing this again?

When I got home, there was an email to me from one of the TTP members asking for my advice.  How did she get better at running as she felt she sucked.  I instantly replied "You do not suck you just need practice.  Consistency is the key and you'll be surprised at how quickly your body adapts."  Ummmm hello Courteney....why are you not listening to your own advice?  This adventure is going to take time...I can't just jump back into the pool and expect my body to be able to swim efficiently!!  I need to remain consistent in my training and it will slowly come back!  No matter the sport....gymnastics, running, swimming, biking....it will all take time to get to the goal that I want.  I NEED TO REMEMBER THIS!!  If it were easy, everyone would be swimming 1000m in 20 minutes and then all the swim lanes would be full.  That would annoy me.  LOL

So to everyone out there trying something new, or coming back from injury, it will take time.  Mentally prepare yourself for this and don't set your expectations so high that you derail your achievement!  You can do it...just as I can...it's just going to take time!

Thanks for stopping by RG....now go out there and push your limits and live life!!!

How do you know you are a runner????

  1. What stroke do you do when you swim? I KNOW I should swim for crosstraining but I'm so reluctant and don't know where to start!

    1. It varies but usually I'll do 50m front crawl and then 50m of breast stroke to catch my breath for 40 laps of the pool. The front crawl works my arms/back/shoulders and the breaststroke seems to work my hamstrings and inner thighs. Hope this helps.

  3. My husband would say that when I apologize to my running shoes for not taking them for a run that day, I am a runner. ;)

  4. I have discovered that I will also talk to ANYONE at the start line of a race! Now all I'm thinking about are those runner translations, lol.
